          The rules of etiquette in American restaurants depend upon a number of factors the physical location of the restaurant, eg., rural or urban; the type of restaurant, eg., informal or formal; and certain standards that are more universal. In other words, some standards of etiquette vary significantly while other standards apply almost anywhere. Learning the proper etiquette in a particular type of restaurant in a particular area may sometimes require instruction, but more commonly it simply requires sensitivity and experience. For example, while it is acceptable to read a magazine in a coffee shop, it is inappropriate to do the same in a more luxurious setting. And, if you are eating in a very rustic setting it may be fine to tuck your napkin into your shirt, but if you are in a sophisticated urban restaurant this behavior would demonstrate a lack of manners. It is safe to say, however, that in virtually every restaurant it is unacceptable to indiscriminately throw your food on the floor. The conclusion we can most likely draw from the above is that while the types and locations of restaurant determine etiquette appropriate to them, some rules apply to all restaurant.

It is acceptable to refuse additional servings of food by saying "No, thank you" and the host or hostess will not be insulted if you do so. Similarly, if you leave a small amount of uneaten food on your plate at a restaurant or in a home, it is not considered an insult. If you eat everything on

the plate, a host or hostess may possibly feel that they have not prepared enough food and might be embarrassed. People in the United States serve and eat food with either hand, but never take food from a communal serving dish with their hands. Generally, a serving utensil is used.

Americans typically use forks, spoons and knives to eat, but there are some types of foods that are acceptable to eat with one's fingers, like sandwiches or pizza. When in doubt, look to see what others are doing. In formal dining situations, if you wonder whether or not it is acceptable to begin eating, you should wait until the oldest woman (or oldest man if no women are present) begins to eat. When eating, do not pick up the bowl or plate from the table to hold underneath your mouth, Even noodles, soup, and rice are eaten with the plate or bowl remaining on the table. When consuming soup and hot liquids, it is considered impolite to slurp - do not do this. When consuming noodles, twirl them around your fork and then put it in your mouth.

If you are a man taking out a woman for dinner, you are almost always expected to pay. This is for the woman to gauge your intentions and interest with her. For example, taking a woman for coffee, versus tacos, versus a fancy dinner, versus for drinks at 11:30pm, all signal many different things to them. So, the date is a -test- of many. Paying is just as important as where you take her, and how late. So, don't assume she is just trying to get a "free meal". Most girls aren't. Also, if you are going out with a friend to eat, almost always, the bill is expected to be split in half, or each person pays for themselves.

If you are eating in a restaurant, you will be expected to add a 15 to 20 % tip for the server to your bill. Thank you very much for your letter which arrived a few days ago. It was lovely to hear from you. I am sorry, I haven’t written for you such along time because I studied hard to pass the final exam. However, I had agreat weekend more than every when I went to live concerts last night with my friends. Now, I am writing to tell you how the wonderful concert is.

It is the beautiful concert I have ever taken part in with many people and the miracle of sound of piano. As you know, my pianist is Yiruma and in last concert I couldn’t believe that he appeared in my eyes and gave me a big hug after his performance. I also listen a soothing music which is played by him and other professional musicians. Only when I heard his song from the stage I feel anythings around me seem to disappear and I can fly with many stars on the sky to forget all my fears which I suffered before.

That is amazing.

Let’s come back to my live concert. It is so cool and until now I can’t forget my feeling about it. Do you often to go live concerts? What kind of music do you like listening to? Who is your favourite singer?

I am glad if you tell me about it in the next letter

Exercise 2: We had dinner at a new restaurant yesterday

Dear Oanh,

Thank you very much for your letter which arrived a few days ago. It was lovely to hear from you.

I think the restaurant which you told me in the letter is very interesting. I also like to eat out and I usually go to a restaurant for dinner with my family tiwce a month. Our favourite restaurant is a traditional restaurant in Hang Bong street. It is not big but it is always busy. There are only afew tables in the restaurant and on each table is a vase with lovely flowers. There are plants in the room corners. I usually order the traditional dishes and eat them with rice. For example, fish cooked with sauce, spring roll,…and vegetable and so on. The food is deliciuous so we enjoy it very much. The service is also quick and frienfdly . My family always have pleasant evening at our favourite restaurant.

Shall we go there when you come to visit my family next time?

Cảm ơn bạn rất nhiều vì lá thư của bạn đã đến một vài ngày trước. Thật đáng yêu khi nghe từ bạn. Tôi xin lỗi, tôi đã viết cho bạn như vậy trong suốt thời gian qua vì tôi đã học tập chăm chỉ để vượt qua kỳ thi cuối cùng. Tuy nhiên, tôi đã có những ngày cuối tuần sôi động hơn mọi khi tôi đến buổi hòa nhạc trực tiếp tối qua với bạn bè. Bây giờ, tôi đang viết để cho bạn biết buổi hòa nhạc tuyệt vời như thế nào.

Đó là buổi hòa nhạc tuyệt vời mà tôi từng tham gia với nhiều người và sự kỳ diệu của âm thanh piano. Như bạn đã biết, nghệ sĩ piano của tôi là Yiruma và trong buổi hòa nhạc cuối cùng, tôi không thể tin rằng anh ấy xuất hiện trong mắt tôi và ôm tôi rất nhiều sau màn trình diễn của anh ấy. Tôi cũng nghe một bản nhạc êm dịu được chơi bởi anh ấy và các nhạc sĩ chuyên nghiệp khác. Chỉ khi tôi nghe bài hát của anh ấy từ sân khấu, tôi cảm thấy mọi thứ xung quanh mình dường như biến mất và tôi có thể bay với nhiều ngôi sao trên bầu trời để quên đi tất cả những nỗi sợ hãi mà tôi phải chịu đựng trước đây.

Thật là tuyệt vời.

Hãy để trở lại buổi hòa nhạc trực tiếp của tôi. Nó thật tuyệt và đến tận bây giờ tôi mới có thể quên cảm giác của mình về nó. Bạn có thường xuyên đi đến buổi hòa nhạc trực tiếp? Bạn thích nghe loại nhạc nào? Ai là ca sĩ yêu thích của bạn?

2. Chúng tôi đã ăn tối tại một nhà hàng mới ngày hôm qua

Cảm ơn bạn rất nhiều vì lá thư của bạn đã đến một vài ngày trước. Thật đáng yêu khi nghe từ bạn.

Tôi nghĩ rằng nhà hàng mà bạn nói với tôi trong thư rất thú vị. Tôi cũng thích đi ăn ngoài và tôi thường đến nhà hàng ăn tối với gia đình tôi một tháng. Nhà hàng yêu thích của chúng tôi là một nhà hàng truyền thống ở phố Hàng Bông. Nó không lớn nhưng luôn bận rộn. Chỉ có một bàn trong nhà hàng và trên mỗi bàn là một bình hoa với những bông hoa xinh xắn. Có cây trong góc phòng. Tôi thường gọi các món ăn truyền thống và ăn với cơm. Ví dụ, cá nấu với nước sốt, chả giò, cuốn và rau và vân vân. Thức ăn rất ngon nên chúng tôi rất thích nó. Dịch vụ này cũng nhanh chóng và frienfdly. Gia đình tôi luôn có buổi tối vui vẻ tại nhà hàng yêu thích của chúng tôi.

Chúng ta sẽ đến đó khi bạn đến thăm gia đình tôi lần sau chứ?
